In difficult moments, adults often move quickly to instruction, correction or consequences. But when a child feels unheard, overwhelmed or disconnected, correction may not be the first thing they are able to receive.

Connection before correction does not mean ignoring boundaries. It means creating enough emotional safety and clarity for guidance to become possible.

1. Pause — What am I actually seeing?

Describe the behaviour without judgement. Instead of “You are being rude,” try: “You raised your voice and walked away.”

Ask yourself: What happened just before this? What am I assuming about my child’s intention?

2. Wonder — What might my child be communicating?

Behaviour can sometimes be a signal of an emotion, unmet need, skill gap, stressor or difficulty expressing something directly.

Ask yourself: Could my child be tired, worried, frustrated, embarrassed, overstimulated, seeking autonomy, or simply unsure what to do next?

3. Connect — Help the child feel seen

Keep the connection brief and genuine. You might lower your voice, move closer without crowding, name what you notice, or listen before explaining.

Try: “I can see this is difficult right now. Tell me what happened.”

4. Guide — Keep the boundary and offer the next step

Once connection is present, move to guidance. Be clear about what needs to happen without turning the moment into a lecture.

Try: “It is okay to be angry. It is not okay to hit. Let’s find another way to show what you need.”

5. Reflect — What changed?

• What did I notice beneath the behaviour?

• What helped my child reconnect?

• Was I able to hold the boundary without losing connection?

• What would I try differently next time?

Try this today

In one difficult moment, delay correction for just a few seconds. Observe, wonder and connect first. Then guide.

LQ Reflection: Connection is not the opposite of discipline. It can be the condition that makes meaningful guidance possible.
